How DBT can help you.

Whilst these problems can feel all consuming and impossible to change, the good news is that they can improve!

You can feel better within yourself, reach your personal goals and live the life you want to live. You can learn to master and control these problems

DBT aims to equip you with the necessary understanding and tools to create change, in particular DBT covers:

  • Mindfulness skills to combat a reduced self awareness and confusion about self

  • Emotion regulation skills to combat emotional dysregulation

  • Walking the middle path skills for family challenges and reducing conflict.

  • Distress tolerance skills to learn to curb your urges and think before you react.

  • Interpersonal effectiveness skills to combat any difficulties you have in your relationships

Who can benefit from DBT.

DBT has an excellent evidence base in supporting individuals with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

It can also help you to calm your emotions so that you can make an informed choice of how you wish to act. That is, it allows you to access your ‘wise mind’ instead of being fuelled solely by your emotions.

A good way of thinking of this may be… You have had a really difficult week and are due to do the weekly food shop. If you were running solely off your emotions you may just buy comfort food and an abundance of chocolate. However, what may be more helpful to do is buy you weekly shop and allow yourself a treat. That is, finding a middle path.
